There is just over a week left for eligible residents to apply for Cape Town’s Debt Cancellation Scheme.

It is available to those with outstanding debts from before July 1, 2018 and the application deadline is June 30.

So far this year, the city has reached interest-free payment agreements with more than 60,000 residents worth around R1.3 billion.

Councilor Siseko Mbandezi, a member of the mayor’s finance committee, urges residents not to put their heads in the sand when it comes to debt.

We want to encourage all residents who find themselves in a difficult financial situation to contact us for assistance.

Our Debt Cancellation Incentive has been carefully budgeted and planned and its objective is to cancel old debt of those who qualify and encourage the payment of current debts.

Our high municipal accounts payment ratio of 98% is a testament to the City’s debt management practices.

A condition of the payment agreement is that debt that is written off will be reinstated if customers fail to meet their payment plans, the city says.

Residents are asked to go to the nearest municipal clientele office so that their situation can be assessed.
